Welcome to the Lakes High School Cross Country Team. On this
page, you can find out basic information on our summer program, team camps,
parent involvement, and other activities. Cross Country season is coming soon, and
once it starts, practices will be at 2:30 to approximately 4:30. For more
information, contact
Coach Clark.
Summer Training: During the summer months, the
coaching staff will be meeting with the team on Mondays, Tuesdays, and
Thursdays. We meet at 9:00 by the Lakes Track and are done between
10:00-10:30. The Seniors will be organizing runs on the other days. Those
athletes who want to compete at the varsity or top junior varsity levels
should be running 5-7 days a week over the summer.
Winter Training: Many of the runners
together to get ready for Spring track (or other sports in a few cases).
Remember, it's easier to train together than alone. There is strength in
numbers. Runners can meet in Mr. Clark's room and drop off their gear there.
Summer Camps:
Team members typically go to one or two camps a year. The
Clear Lake/White Pass
camp in mid July and the
South Sound Cross Country Camp. The White Pass Camp fills by
December. The second camp is a day camp put on by Coach Clark and
several other area coaches. We strongly urge Lakes athletes to attend. The camp is held at Lakes, and is open to
runners from middle school through high school. The Lakes Cross Country
Booster Club always has some partial scholarships available. See Coach Clark for
more information. The Falcon Running Camp and Olympic Peaks camps are
also excellent camps that runners may wish to attend in Washington. There
are also excellent camps in Montana and Oregon for those who may be
interested.
Team Camp:
Lakes runners go on a team camping trip every year at the
start of the season. This years team Camp will be on the first weekend
after the start of the season. It will be on Anderson Island.
XC Parent BBQ: Our parent BBQ and informational meeting
is held during the first week of practice at Fort Steilacoom Park. It is a
potluck, and team members will sign up for items to bring. Please make plans
to attend.
Practice: We will practice daily from 2:45-4:30.
Varsity practices will be held on Saturdays when there are no meets. During
the weeks prior to school, we will also have a short (45 minute) practice
for all athletes who hope to be in the top 10. All athletes are welcome.
Morning practices will consist of either short runs, swimming, or cycling.
Once school starts, morning runs will be scaled back.
Team Activities:
We traditionally have a barbecue to start the summer, and trips to
run at different
locations to run during June and July. Our parent barbecue will be held in
the evening during the latter half of the first week of fall practice. The
final date has not been determined at this time. We also do several fund
raisers which help cover additional expenses such as our overnight trip to
an invitational meet, academic t-shirts, camp scholarships, etc.
Who can compete:
Lakes Cross-Country is a "no cut" sport open to everyone.
Runners who help with fund raisers and take part in summer training are
also eligible for our overnight invitational. All eligible runners will
run in all regular season meets and several invitational meets as well.
Eligibility:
Athletes must have a current physical (good for two
years), copy of their medical insurance, A.S.B. card, and all paperwork
filled out prior to the first day of practice. Packets can be picked up at
the student accounts office.
Equipment:
Please see the team handbook for detailed information
(coming soon). Most important are good running shoes. South Sound Running
(down town Tacoma and Olympia). There are several good running stores in
Seattle as well including Super Jock 'n Jill, Road Runner Sports, and The
Seattle Running Company which offer excellent service and
selection. Also, a running watch is advised. These can be picked up
anywhere.
Parent Support:
The Lakes Cross-Country team has a tradition of
outstanding parent support. Our parents are largely responsible for the
running of the Fort Steilacoom Invitational (Over 50 teams), the South
puget Sound League and West Central District meets, and a host of other activities.
Fund Raisers:
This years garage sale/car wash/is scheduled for August
23. Start collecting your treasures now.
Booster Club:
Lakes Cross Country also has our own booster club. They
raise funds for the team, provide grants for cross country camps, and a
variety of other activities. They have 501C-3 status, and have really been
a great source of support for the team. The booster club is always looking
for new members. To find out more information, contact Coach Clark.
